Today’s pick: For a Valentine’s Day romp
Today’s pick: The Lake and Stars
“Which piece do you like the best?” my
boyfriend asked me as we walked past rows of mannequins dressed in a wide range
of underwear and lingerie from Christian Dior to Myla. We were at the opening
of the new London Fashion Textile Museum show, “Undercover: The Evolution of
Underwear.” I promptly pointed to a sheer, olive green onesie with vertical
ivory ribbons on the bodice.
We were there to meet a friend, Matt
Sundin, who had a short film in the exhibition. When we found Matt in the
crowded museum, he introduced me to his friend, an intimate apparel designer
named Nikki Dekker. “That one’s mine,” she said pointing to the very same piece
that I had given props to earlier. Serendipity!
Her line, which she designs with partner
Maayan Zilberman, is called The Lake and Stars, which references an old
Victorian euphemism for a woman’s talent in bed. The work looks modern, cool
and hot in an understated way that doesn’t scream, “I’m trying to be sexy right now.” And with major stores in the States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Japan carrying the one-year-old brand, their smart take on underwear clearly seems to be going over well.
