Totally blushing now

AlexSandro Palombo, who contributed to our upcoming fashion month edition, surprised me with a blog post and illustration portraying me as the “subway’s fashion queen” with some major cleavage action. Too funny!

NYFW countdown: Pre-Fashion Week cravings

Bensoni’s giant chocolate chip cookie

Fashion designers have long compared creating a collection to giving birth for a reason. First they have to conceive the idea, and then there’s all of those stressed-filled months spent worrying about its development. Not to mention all of those weird cravings. Yes, cravings. Designers behind a few of New York’s beloved brands fill us in on the pleasures and pains they experience while hard at work in their studios.

“For me, creating a new collection is always a painful process until it starts emerging. Once it comes, it’s all worth it. The biggest difference from being pregnant is that the fashion cravings are not the healthy ones – white wine, cigarettes. I go through many sleepless nights and can’t think straight. And sometimes my temperament seems irrational. But at least in the end, everything comes back to the right place.” -Sophie Theallet

“Right now, I’m obsessed with Olive’s giant chocolate chip cookies. For me the collection feels like a child all grown up and ready to go on its own way into the real world. Like sending your child off to college. Not that I know what that feels like.” -Bensoni co-designer Sonia Yoon

“Due to the lack of time and sleep, we tend to eat a lot of takeout and junk food under the guise of treating ourselves for all the hard work we’re doing. We allow ourselves to eat anything guilt-free. Greasy Reuben [sandwiches] from the diner or a lumberjack breakfast always work well to calm those cravings.” -Costello Tagliapietra duo Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra

Trend report: The season of contrasts

As I mentioned before, there seemed to be quite a few opposing visions of what women want to wear during the spring 2010 shows. The ideas were so wide-ranging, though, that there was something for everyone to like. In addition to Team Sex Kitten vs Team Good Girl, which I talked about here, a few other obvious oppositions have emerged for spring.

The sporty v. the romantic
Athletic references were all over the place: Alexander Wang and Alexandre Herchcovitch’s football themed collections, Y-3’s ode to the World Cup, Balenciaga’s techno hoodies, Louis Vuitton’s fanny packs and drawstring detailing, the list goes on. The sporty looks also ran the gamut from purely functional to luxe and fabulous. On the opposite end of the fashion spectrum, though, were super romantic ruffles and feminine draping a la Stella McCartney, Etro and Burberry.

Colorful graphic prints v. nudes
After a few seasons of goth and rocker-fueled black, color is popping up for spring in a big way. Witness the primary-colored and African-influenced graphic prints at Paul Smith and Marc by Marc Jacobs, the rich tones at Rochas and the eye-popping use of red at Dolce & Gabbana. Meanwhile, nudes sprung up at Givenchy, Lanvin, Chloe and a litany of others.

LFW: What to wear to the shows

Maybe it’s because of all the gray weather, but the UK kids love color and bold graphic prints. Whether worn as a strategic pop to a monochromatic look or piled on magpie style, it’s all about grabbing the eye here.

Christopher Kane t-shirt (top left)
Kane’s very cool screaming monkey has become a symbol of sorts in fashion. It says, “I scoff in the face of all things commercial,” which is very London.

Cooperative Designs skirt (bottom left)

Pair this trippy skirt with a slouchy tee and brogues that are comfy enough for trekking the shows in.

Church’s brogues (bottom right)

The classic lace-up shoe is still queen here.

Topshop dress (top right)

It’s dip dyed and fringed. That’s two trends in one. Wear it responsibly.
