Tracking a trend: Vampires are so having a moment

I’m admittedly a little slow catching on to the whole vampire phenomenon happening in pop culture right now. I just saw the bloodsucking blockbuster “Twilight” a few nights ago and have yet to catch an episode of the HBO television series “True Blood” which seems to be airing internationally (advertisements for it are all over the tube stations in London.) But when I sat in a small screening room at the Soho House last night and watched a woman suck the living daylights out of her lover’s neck in the short film called “High,” I figured it was safe to say that the vampire bug has bitten the fashion kids too. Jonathan Kelsey debuted the bone-chilling short flick, which the director Sara Dunlop created for his eponymous shoe line, at a crowded launch party last night (Jonathan’s partner Greg De Roeck wrote the script). It also debuted on SHOWStudio last night and will be on the Web site for the next month. In the crowded bar downstairs where guests congratulated Team Kelsey, Womack & Womack’s “Baby I’m Scared Of You” blasted from the speakers. The song’s title pretty much summed up the night.

Milan: Harem pants are catching on

Tamu and I were chatting this morning about how we thought the harem pant would be one of those trends that would burn out faster than others. But she’s been spotting quite a few women wearing drop crotch trousers all over Milan, and looking good in them. Add to that the recent Givenchy show in Paris and it looks like maybe the trend will last a few more seasons.

Today’s pick: Summer sale items that work for autumn

These days, it’s all about the sales-racks-only shopping policy, with stores marking down items as low as ever. And if you’re smart, this little retail transition period that we’re currently in (when shops clear out the spring/summer goods to make room for fall) could be an opportunity for you to craftily update your wardrobe for autumn on the wallet-friendly tip. Case in point: These wedges that are currently on sale for half off the original price at Opening Ceremony. They’d look great with the lightest summer dress and yet would feel completely fresh paired with opaque hose for autumn and winter.

Boys club: Pintando Pasos Chucks

My co-worker Ian came back from a holiday in Mexico wearing these trippy Converse and they got so much attention in the office, I felt compelled to give them a shout out here. The Chucks are part of a limited edition collection of hand-painted shoes that Converse produced in partnership with a group of Oaxaca-based artists called Pintando Pasos. Each pair features graphic prints inspired by the area’s traditional ancestral jicara bowls. A portion of all sales (the shoes retail for $300) will go to local charities in Oaxaca.

Karl_Lagerfeld.jpg

“This whole crisis is like a big spring housecleaning — both moral and physical. There is no creative evolution if you don’t have dramatic moments like this. Bling is over. Red carpety covered with rhinestones is out. I call it ‘the new modesty.’”

- Karl Lagerfeld voicing what many of us have been thinking in The New York Times. Because, honestly, those shoe and It bag prices couldn’t go any higher. Something had to give.
