Daily pick: Rosebud Salve saved my crackly hands
First of all, sorry for the increasingly spotty blog posts. For the past month, I’ve been swimming in a sea of holiday gift guides, year-end lists, and 2010 planning. At the moment, I’m in Stockholm, freezing. The irony is, the Swedes I’ve talked to here consider these brick cold temperatures to be unseasonably mild; it’s usually even colder this time of year, with snow on the ground. As a result of the frigid weather, I’ve had to upgrade my hand moisturizer from Kiehl’s to Rosebud Salve, which I always keep in my handbag. Yes, Rosebud Salve is a lip balm. I know. But when your hands are feeling especially brittle, it works amazingly well as a moisturizer. I’m so impressed with how the shea butter and Vitamin E formula has kept my hands chap-free, that I’m going to give out the old school tins as holiday stocking stuffers. Everyone needs this kind of fix-it-all in their life. Another random cold-weather trick: If you tend to get all teary in the cold, like I do, put a very tiny bit of salve under your eyes before you go outdoors to keep from getting dry under eye circles.
Happenings: Rodarte for Target is cuter than we expected
Considering how rarefied their ready-to-wear work is, I was skeptical about Rodarte collaborating with Target. It’s one thing to create an expensive cobwebby knit dress that looks like it’s about to artfully fall apart, and another thing entirely to create a cheap one that really could fall apart. (I love Target more than most. But let’s be honest, the materials are of a different quality.) Well, it turns out that the Rodarte for Target capsule collection is way cute. It’s nice to see Kate and Laura Mulleavy channel the essence of their aesthetic into more wearable, affordable pieces that work for the day-to-day. The collection has a young, goth girl meets ’80s “Breakfast Club” kind of sensibility to it. It goes on sale December 20.
Milan: The new nomad
Four questions: Sonia and Nathalie Rykiel talk lingerie
Nathalie: I thought about what I would like to wear. I wanted it to be sophisticated lingerie that would appeal to all types of women. There’s no age target. It’s just really sexy. I especially love the satin series that we did, which is a bit ’30s. It’s all very coquettish, but very sophisticated as well.
Sonia: The first quality of lingerie is to make you look like you’re naked. [And the second is] to make you feel as sexy as if you were naked.
What is your favorite clothing item to wear on top of lingerie?
Sonia: I love the black smoking [suit]. It can be chic at night and perfectly casual during the day.
The lingerie collection hits stores during the holiday season. What makes it such a great gift item?
Sonia: Because it’s like asking someone to spend the night with you.
Happenings: Basel Miami
In just a few days, the art and fashion set will be traveling down to Miami for Basel. It’s like the art world’s equivalent of fashion week, only with much more sand, sun, and baubles. Sadly, I won’t be there this year. But I’m having a good time wading through the party invites nonetheless. My favorite so far, is the invitation to the always dapper Kehinde Wiley’s annual fish fry, which has become the art fair’s unofficial wrap party. I love it for no other reason than the outfit he’s wearing in it: the Brooklyn Zouk shirt, the glasses, and the fish! Only Kehinde could turn a giant lane snapper into the ultimate accessory.
