NYFW: It’s almost that time

By admin on August 10, 2009 0 Comments

Erin Wasson.jpg
Nearly every email I’ve received in my inbox over the past few days includes some variation of this line: “I can’t believe it’s August already!”

I can’t believe it either. Especially because that means Fashion Week is around the corner. I’ve been busily planning out our coverage of it and visiting various designers’ work studios in the process, which is why my blog posts have been so spotty recently. That said, expect lots of little Fashion Week preview bits and bobs between now and September 10, which is when it all kicks off in New York.

First up: Erin Wasson X RVCA will be showing in New York’s Bryant Park tents for the first time. “It’s really a thrill to be able to take a venue everyone in the fashion industry knows so well, and bring in new personalities and a new vibe that spin the experience in a different direction,” she says in a press release. “I mean, it’s almost too predictable to do something ‘cool’ in, like, an abandoned warehouse. Cool can happen anywhere. It’s a state of mind. That’s the essence of the Erin Wasson x RVCA brand, and there’s no reason not to follow that logic onto the runway.” She’s got a point about the abandoned warehouse as show venue trend. Trekking from one far out, random, deserted street to another can get old when so many designers attempt to “stand out” in basically the same way. It’s also worth noting that this will be New York Fashion Week’s last season at the Bryant Park tents. Afterwards, it moves to Lincoln Center.

Should be cool: “Good Hair”

By admin on August 7, 2009 0 Comments

The subject of “good” and “bad” hair in the black American community is a touchy one, among other things. It’s the stuff of university panel discussions and women’s magazine articles and beauty product launches and mother/daughter heart-to-hearts and performance art work and family reunion arguments and the list goes on. As far as movies go, Spike Lee made the definitive statement about the subject in his film “School Daze” with a musical number in which a sorority of girls with “good hair” (long and straight or wavy) battle a sorority of girls with “bad hair” (shorter and naturally curly or kinky.) That scene alone fueled two decades’ worth of African-American cultural studies classroom debates (I sat through several in college). So I was wary when I first heard about Chris Rock’s film, “Good Hair.” The topic just seemed so exhausting and démodé in this supposedly post-racial era of Barack Obama. But clearly the subject matter still needs to be talked about. The movie trailer is hilarious and filled with little-known beauty facts (who knew that the popular ’80s haircut, the asymmetrical, was the result of a bad perm?), but also kind of tragic (the shot of a little girl getting prepped for a chemical straightner made me cringe.) I’ll be looking forward to seeing the entire movie on October 9th.

Interview: How Gwyneth went from GOOP to fashion design

Considering how much she’s been channeling her inner fashion editor (and food expert and health guru and relationship columnist and music writer…) it was kind of inevitable that Gwyneth Paltrow would try her hand at designing clothing too. Her capsule collection, ZOEtee’s Loves Gwyneth, a series of drapey dresses and breezy separates, hits stores this month. Paris-based designer Laure Pariente, who is the brain behind the cultish t-shirt brand, filled me in on how it all came together.

How did you and Gwyneth decide to collaborate?

It came very easily because Gwyneth was already a fan of ZOEtee’s. So for me it made sense to do a collection inspired by her style and with her input. And she ended up really liking the idea. She loves clothes so that made the collaboration really exciting.

How much did she take part in the design process? How did you divide up tasks?

I met with her twice at her house in London. I took fabric and sketches to the first appointment. She selected seven out of 15 that we drew. And she chose all of the fabric, color and finishing. A month later, I went back with a prototype and did the fittings on Gwyneth. She was really involved in the development process from beginning to end.

What about Gwyneth makes her in tune with the brand?

She really matches the spirit of ZOEtee’s, which is a really laidback daytime style and an easy elegant approach to evening. She’s very casual and active every day. So her collection infused more of that sensibility. The clothing is comfortable enough for a busy morning and elegant enough for an evening out. She’s also very sweet and yet tough. She was really the perfect girl to work with and brought something new to the idea of wearing jersey. The collection is a play on form with oversized and asymmetrical pieces that you can mix and match.

Are there any other celebrities who you’d like to work with next?

I know that Kate Moss is a big fan. She would be amazing. And I recently sent Cameron Diaz a packet of tees and she was dancing in her living room. She’s a fan as well. I would love to do more of these collaborations but nothing is planned at the moment.

What makes the perfect t-shirt?

For me, it’s the one you steal from your boyfriend and wear and wear and wear. You can wear it in the morning and then at night, layered over a bra with your heels on. It’s all in the touch, the softness. We work with soft, organic Japanese cotton. You touch it and then you want to wear it.

Fun with fall campaigns: Victoria Beckham’s body that won’t quit

Say what you will about Victoria Beckham’s person style, you can’t argue the fact that the mother of three stays in shape. She flaunts her figure (and then some) in a new ad campaign for Emporio Armani that makes me want to walk out of the office right now and head for the nearest treadmill. And I don’t even like the gym (I’m more of a yoga girl.) But I digress. In other fall ad campaign news, the supermodels are still as popular as ever with Christy Turlington replacing Claudia Schiffer in the new Yves Saint Laurent campaign. Schiffer, meanwhile, appears alongside Naomi Campbell and Eva Herzigova in Dolce & Gabbana’s new ads. See these (if you haven’t sized them up in the September issues already) and a few other campaign images here.

Problem solved: Concealing broken capillaries

Q: I have visible broken capillaries on my face. Can you recommend a good way to hide them? -Marsha S.

A: “My favorite concealer for this is Cover FX Total Coverage Cream,” says our go-to beauty expert, celebrity makeup artist Talia Shobrook, whose clients include Kate Bosworth. “It gives enough coverage without looking too heavy. For the best application, I suggest using a small brush to dab the makeup onto the areas of concern. Afterwards lightly dust on translucent powder to set it.”

Mark your calendars: Rodarte does Target

In possibly the most unlikely high/low design collaboration yet, Rodarte will team up with Target to design a capsule collection for its Go International line. Kate and Laura Mulleavy produce the most rarefied (and expensive) works for their CFDA award-winning line. So when Target tells WWD that their work for the affordable, mass market chain will feature “a rich mix of patterns and fabrications” priced from $9.99 to $79.99 we have a hard time picturing how that will work out. But then again, we had the same reaction when H&M announced its partnership with Comme des Garçons and that collection ended up looking great. The Rodarte Go collection will hit stores and the Target Web site on December 20.

Sounds cool: Rankin’s live shoot

During a visit with Matthew Williamson the other day, he told me that he was headed to a retrospective of Rankin’s work. And today, a co-worker of mine randomly mentioned that she wants to be shot by the popular portrait photographer for a special project he’s doing. So Rankin is purely on the collective brain right now. You can apply to have him take your picture for a fee of £50, which will go directly to Oxfam. Just take a picture of yourself and submit it along with an an explanation of why you want the Rankin treatment here. If you’re lucky, he’ll make you look all fantastic and arty like the girl pictured above.

One step too far: Would you pay nearly €400 for this?

“No, no, no,” Michael said as he walked over to my desk. The sound of irritation in his voice made me wonder if he had another unpleasant encounter with a white suit. I was mistaken.

“This is just all wrong,” he said handing me a printout of an Ann Demeulemeester necklace priced at €383. She’s selling fine jewelry now, so what?

“Look closer,” he said. It turns out the necklace is — wait for it –an actual feather on a gunmetal chain. A feather plucked from a bird. A feather that could disintegrate in one wearing. A feather like the ones that are stuffed in the pillows on my bed. Yup, €383 Euros for that. We love Ann Demeulemeester and all, but this pricing seems completely out of touch with reality right now. Unless the feather was plucked from a rare, exotic species (and who would want to do that?), we can’t for the life of us see what in this item’s fabrication could justify the asking price. Michael says it best, “Maybe I should start making feather necklaces too.”

Problem solved: To blush or not (you ask, an expert answers)

Q: “Is blush a do or don’t these days?” -Noemie

A: “I think a pinched cheek or a peachy glow looks amazing. If you are a bronzer fan, try putting on a flash of pink on the apple of your cheeks,” advises celebrity makeup artist Talia Shobrook. “Lorac Cosmetics has a blush/bronzer duo compact that works well for this. If you just want a fresh look, I suggest a cheek stain like Stila Cherry Crush, which can also be used on the lips,” she adds.
