Studio visit: Jonathan Kelsey loves a sexy boot, hates Uggs

By admin on May 29, 2009 0 Comments

I popped by Jonathan Kelsey’s studio in Primrose Hill this week for a visit, catching him during a rare moment of downtime. He’s been quite busy flying back and forth between Milan and London (in addition to his own shoe line, he also designs for Emilio Pucci and Mulberry) and working on a short film with his partner, Gregory, that will debut later in June. We chatted about his love of Amy Winehouse, Roisin Murphy doing the running man in his heels and our mutual disdain for Uggs.

Today’s pick: Beatrix Ong’s sensibly heeled shoes

I injured my knee after a particularly strenuous yoga class a few weeks ago. One MRI, two x-rays and several visits with  a specialist later, I found out that I have a weird kneecap “tracking” disorder in which they want to twist and pop out of the sockets (it’s as painful as it sounds.) I’m recovering nicely but I won’t be wearing stilettos anytime soon. That said, summer will be all about flats for me. Beatrix Ong, has a great summer collection of shoes that look vintage, yet timelessly cool. They also come in all heights, which is a plus for me. She’s also designing a small capsule collection for Dover Street Market, the London emporium of all things hip, which is a plus for her.

Talking points: Tough times for Lacroix and Branquinho

1) Christian Lacroix files for bankruptcy. Is it the end of an era for couture? [NYT]

2) Jean-Philippe Delhomme, the painfully cool French illustrator, has joined the blogging world, posting renderings of some of your favorite fashion characters (think Karl Lagerfeld) on his new Web site.  [Style]
3) Style Bubble blogger, Susie, is modeling some of the best looks from the UK’s Graduate Fashion Week in today’s UK Metro. [StyleBubble]

Tracking a trend: Those Topshop sequin waist coats look familiar

Of all of summer’s trends, sequins may be having the biggest moment. What girl doesn’t love a glittery top or pair of shoes? Sequin and beaded waistcoats (or vests, as they’re called in America) are especially popular on the high street right now. They’re all over stores like Topshop (a limited edition gunmetal Kate Moss for Topshop version sold out immediately after hitting stores) and Zara. When Romina, walked into the office today, wearing an especially cute number in black and gold, I could have sworn it came from Topshop. But, non. She bought it in her home country, Tunisia, where you can buy the traditional North African garment (and matching pants!!) in all colors from just about any souk for about 15 dinars (roughly £7 or $11.)

Sneak peek: “Coco Avant Chanel”

“Now, I want to see the rest of it,” my
co-worker Emma said to me as we walked out of a screening of  “Coco Avant Chanel,” which has opened in theaters in France but hits theaters in the rest of world this July. I felt the same way. The movie is filled with languid,
beautifully shot scenes intensified by sublime Karl Lagerfeld-supervised
costumes and Audrey Tautou’s intense transformation into Coco. And yet, it left me
wanting to know more about a woman who clearly defied the social conventions of
her time in such a major way. Coco was an orphan who juggled two aristocratic
lovers (mostly refusing to sleep with one, and resigning herself to being the
mistress of the married other) in order to secure a roof over her head, a
career, personal wealth, and ultimately her  “freedom.” She often dressed in men’s clothing and persuaded
women obsessed with feathers and tight corsets to drop the frills. It’s strong
pre-feminist stuff. But the film seems to gloss over the cultural boundaries
she pushed as an artist and careerist in favor of the love story, which is a
moving one nonetheless.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Twitter imposter

By admin on May 27, 2009 0 Comments
Karl_Lagerfeld.jpg
Second to his legendary body of work, Karl Lagerfeld is probably best known for his random, quotable quips. I’ll never forget an article in which he told an interviewer that he always shields his eyes in case a stranger attempts to throw “chemicals” in his face and he’d be like an old teacher whose wife burnt him with acid and as a result was cursed with the nickname Mr. Pommes Frites. The way the mind works! So when someone mentioned to me that Karl has started a Twitter page, I was curious to know if the page, which is about 26, 384 followers strong, was for real or the product of another social networking imposter. It turns out it’s the latter. I called Lagerfeld’s PR office in Paris and a rep explained that the page is indeed written by a fan posing as Karl, but the quotes are real, pulled from old interviews that have run in various publications. So, mystery solved.

Today’s pick: Acne’s deus ex machina, er, moto jacket

By admin on May 26, 2009 0 Comments

After having eyed this black suede motorcycle jacket on Acne’s Web site for about two weeks, I had a showdown with a total stranger over it during a shopping trip to Browns. It all began when I called the store and found out that they only had one left in stock.

“I’ll take it. I’m coming over right now,” I told the sales girl on the phone.
But just as I was about to hang up in victory she stopped me: “I just have to call another customer who put the jacket on hold this morning to see if she actually wants to buy it.”
I protested that I was right around the corner from the store, with wallet in hand. “Don’t worry, I’ll call you right back,” she assured me. I decided to take matters into my own hands and just show up at the store and “jack” my jacket. Let me interrupt the story right here and establish that I’m not one of those wild-eyed, obsessive shoppers who hoard all of the shoes at a sample sale. And despite what I do for a living, I’m not even someone who particularly enjoys talking about shopping (at a dinner party, I’d rather talk about anything else, honestly.)  But something about this jacket brought out the crazy in me. (And for some reason, I feel the need to share all of this with you.)
I arrived to find the other shopper standing at the register with my soon-to-be purchase!
“She’s trying to decide whether or not she wants to buy it. I think it’s yours,” a second salesgirl whispered to me with a wink as I gave my rival the stink eye. The blasted woman ended up purchasing the jacket. But my deus ex machina came in the form of a second version in emerald green (it turns out Browns’ actually had two left, not one.) It turns out the color suits me better anyway.
