On the street: More G20 protest style

Her protest itinerary: “We have been attending as many protests as possible. Today, we are supporting the ‘Stop the War Coalition.’ It’s weird, though, because today has been eerily quiet. We were at [a protest] for three hours and nothing happened. It was really calm. We won’t give up though!”

Closet envy: Nicola Vassell

In many ways, Nicola Vassell represents the “new” New York way of dressing. The city is ground zero for the credit crunch and has become a place where girls feel guilty for purchasing a showy designer bag or an expensive on-trend piece.

“Sure I’ve had to be more creative and look in unexpected places for good bargains as a result of the recession. But I’ve been doing that since the last economic downturn so I’m way ahead of the game,” says Vassell, who often wears feminine skirts and dresses and gives them an urban edge with bold accessories. Her closet includes a mix of price points from H&M to Yves Saint Laurent. The former model works as a director at the Manhattan art gallery Deitch Projects, which recently made fashion headlines when it teamed up with Louis Vuitton to produce a retrospective exhibit of the late designer Stephen Sprouse. Vassell takes an art collector’s approach to her closet, seeking out unique pieces that she’ll want to hold on to. She tells us what motivates her to get dressed.

1) The city
“Manhattan is my passion. I love that there is always something new,” she says. “New York City style is multi-variant; from chic to rugged, avant garde to conventional. And so my way of dressing is much like New York. It’s kind of multi-polar. I’m always experimenting,” she explains.

2) The day ahead
Unlike most people, Vassell doesn’t have a typical workday. She could be in the gallery helping install a show one day, at her desk coordinating interviews for one of the many artists she manages (including painters Kehinde Wiley and Tauba Auerbach) on another, or meeting with collectors at an art fair the next. So functionality is important. “I think about what I must achieve that day. I rarely go home to change for evening, so whatever I put on needs to transition without commotion from day to night,” she says. “So I rely on statement pieces that can go from, say, the belted, well-starched auction house look to the cruddy, unpretentious art party,” she adds.

3) Her personal stamp
Vassell says she’s already been a sucker for trendy trends and doesn’t need to go there again, thank you very much. “I laugh looking back at them. Remember neon color bicycle shorts? Or jean shorts cut at the knee and rolled up? I was a victim,” she admits. “At this point I know what works for me. I think women looking to have a unique personal style should stay away from trends unless she can prop them up in her own personal manner.”

Why they’re so worked up: “What people are most angry about today are the bankers. Our saying for the day is, ‘Bankers are wankers.’ What we hope is that the protest allows for people to be listened to. Climate change and the entire banking system should be two of the summit’s biggest concerns.”

Dinners gone wild: The launch continues…

By admin on April 2, 2009 0 Comments

It’s a real sign of the times that one of the fashion world’s biggest events of the year, came courtesy of a fast fashion chain known for its relatively inexpensive wares. Marc Jacobs, Anna Wintour, Jason Wu, Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Lopez were among the guests who showed up at Balthazar in New York last night to help Kate Moss and Phillip Green celebrate the opening of Topshop. In other TS news, the Guardian ran a pretty hilarious opening day survival guide this week.

Meet the women who Kate Moss thinks are especially well-dressed. They’re all Topshop staffers. And the whole best-dressed list is a part of a special Topshop-dedicated edition of Grazia magazine, which is a part of the mega-chain’s Master Plan to make sure you remember that her spring collection is hitting clothing racks this Thursday. Oh, and something about a store opening in New York this week.

New addictions: Thierry Mugler Gloss

Thierry Mugler has been in the press a lot lately for designing the costumes for Beyoncé Knowles’ alter-ego Sasha Fierce on her current world tour. That’s great and all but let’s talk about the fierceness that is his Blue Effect Plexi Gloss lip lacquer. Last month, one of his staffers gave me a tube when I popped by his showroom during the Paris collections. Inside, I balked. Lavender blue lip gloss? Really? Yes, really. I tested it out in my hotel room the next day and liked it enough to rock it out in public. I even got a few compliments on it. I haven’t really worn it since (I’m a lip biter and therefore a Kiehl’s tinted lip balm kind of girl), but decided to try it again this morning. The spring sun gave it the best kind of sci-fi degradé. So cool. Too bad I chewed it all off by the time I got to the office.

Happy G20 day: Deconstructing Michelle Obama’s uniform

By admin on April 1, 2009 0 Comments

As I type this, the G20 summit is getting underway across town. President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama kicked the day off with a breakfast with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah. The British papers are giving a good deal of real estate to what the first ladies will be wearing. This morning, Michelle looked optimistic in a spring-like update on what has become her signature: an embellished cardigan and pencil skirt (both from J.Crew) paired with a multi-strand pearl necklace. While some critics have complained that her uniform is too formulaic, I think her no-fuss approach sends the right message for a time like this. It shows that she cares about her personal stamp and knows what looks right on her, but has her priorities.
