Too good not to share: El Michels Affair covers Wu-Tang

By admin on April 30, 2009 0 Comments

I’m not a huge hip hop head, but I am an old Wu-Tang clan fan. I just came across El Michels Affair’s cover of “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and cannot stop listening to it (the album “Enter the 37th Chamber” hit stores last week). The sound of this tribe of little posturing child MCs chanting over angry versions of Old Dirty Bastard’s iconic horns is goosebump-inducing.

Today’s pick: The Johnsens

Three reasons why I’m into these Tashkent by Cheyenne heels: 1) They’re called The Johnsen, which normally brings to mind American southern family reunions, an idea that makes me nostalgic, 2) They are sturdy enough to walk in without worrying that you’ll break an ankle or heel, and 3) They’re versatile enough to wear with just about anything.

On the street: Milan dispatch

By admin on April 30, 2009 0 Comments

putabowonit.jpg

Beginning today, you’ll be seeing more
street style photos from the cities where Metro is published around the world. I’m
especially excited about the photos that will come from Milan, courtesy of Tamu
McPherson. I first met her in Milan outside of the Blugirl show last season and
then bumped into her again at Burberry and Alberta Ferretti. She was shooting
an on-the-street accessories story for ELLE Italy. Since then I’ve periodically
checked in to her fairly new blog, All the Pretty Birds, to get a glimpse
of what’s happening on the streets in her city. The former New Yorker will be
sending in photo dispatches from Milan each week. The preview photos above and below are
just a small example of her sharp eye.

Today’s pick: Be@rbrick madness at Dover Street Market

By admin on April 29, 2009 0 Comments
DSM - Bearbrick - thick+short keychain_lo.jpg
Dover Street Market has become a limited edition Japanese toy geek’s wet dream with its latest window display, which features giant Be@rbrick figures based on the popular Tokyo figurines. Even cooler than the installment is the Be@rbrick key chain above, which could totally work as a bracelet.

pascal.jpg
Name: Pascal

Spotted: Paris

Occupation: Business development manager

His favorite item in his closet: “I just got this amazing aviator style jacket. I saw one like it five years ago but couldn’t afford it. Now, it’s finally in my closet. It cost me 1,200 euros! It’s a dark shade of green and made with delicate leather. I won’t be wearing it often because it won’t withstand the slightest drop of water.”

If he could banish one trend from existence it would be: “Shoulder pads in every shape and form.”
How he describes his personal style: “50 percent casual chic, 30 percent statement designer pieces and 20 percent cheap chic.”

I’m back…

Positano.jpg

…and trying to get into the swing of things after spending the last five days exploring Positano, Italy. The trip was pretty spectacular from the sunny weather to the beautiful views to the incredibly fresh food (heaven is a dinner of lobster linguine and zucchini flowers overlooking the Mediterranean.) As inspired as Positano was on the culinary and natural wonders front (the entire city is an UNESCO World Heritage site), it didn’t have much of a local style scene despite the many travel articles I’ve read about it that claim so. I did, however, discover a cool little boutique called D’Anna after I befriended the owner’s wife, Simona, on the beach. It turns out it’s the only place on the Amalfi coast where fashion lovers can get their Balenciaga, Prada or Marc Jacobs fix.

Style journal: Let’s talk about Beyoncé Knowles’ hair

By admin on April 23, 2009 0 Comments
Beyonceweavealicious.jpg
A hair cut can change everything. Just ask Ciara, Cassie, Christina Milian, and nearly every other woman singer in the urban music landscape right now who has recently unveiled “edgy” new ‘dos and wardrobes in the hopes of sparking public interest and boosting record sales. We can thank Rihanna for the music world’s punky ’80s moment, because we all know that it wasn’t until she ditched the honey colored weave and upped the goth punk quotient in her personal styling did the world really begin to pay attention to her. This leads me to the real heart of this post: Beyoncé Knowles.
I love her as much as anyone (and have the iTunes purchases to prove it.) But her personal style is increasingly seeming dated and out of touch with the times. It’s strange, though, because she’s wearing all of the “right” things: a Balmain jacket, Gareth Pugh dress, those Louis Vuitton “Africa” shoes, the list goes on. And yet she always looks a tad bit…beauty pageant.
I blame the hair. During her Destiny’s Child days, Beyoncé’s long, luscious, honey-colored weave sparked knock-offs all over the industry (even a newbie Rihanna sported a Beyoncé style weavealicious locks.) But today? To quote my friend Malcolm Venable, “No, ma’am.”
Granted, her Texas glamour girlness has always been a part of her charm. And from a business stand-point, her consistency might be smart (Cindy Crawford once said in an interview that she refused to change her hair because the world identified with it.) But Beyonce’s big, bouncy hair is the thing that sends an otherwise cool clothing item into beauty queen pageant territory and makes her alter-ego Sasha Fierce simply look like a nice idea. Not to mention that her go-to lacefront locks seem to age her a good five years. Not that I think she should shave her head into a mohawk and begin wearing all-black either. Simply dialing the volume down a few notches (like in her “Single Ladies” video) and swearing off the hot rollers could make all the difference in the world.

Today’s pick: M.A.C. Fix + Rose

By admin on April 23, 2009 0 Comments

MacFixRose.jpg
M.A.C. cosmetics’ summer collection is all about the rose from its new lipglass color, Virgin Kiss, a shimmery pale pink, to its Just a Pinch Gel Blush, which gives a “rosy glow.” But my personal favorite from the collection is the finishing spray, Fix + Rose, made of green tea, chamomile and natural rose water. It’s meant to be the last touch to your morning makeup routine but I plan to use it as a midday cool-off on hot summer days.

Happy Earth Day: Pharrell Williams talks Bionic Yarn

By admin on April 22, 2009 0 Comments

mcp_0494.jpg
Long the territory of massive gas-guzzling chauffeured luxury SUVs and private chartered planes, the popular music world has not always been the most eco-friendly one. But now that Pharrell Williams has launched an environmentally sustainable fabric line, called Bionic Yarn, with partner Tyson Toussant, that might change. “I’ve learned a lot over the years and I want to lead by example,” he explains. An old friend of mine, I first began noticing Williams shift to greener living when he downsized his fleet of luxury cars to reduce his carbon footprint several years ago. Now, he plans to incorporate the organic fabric made of recycled plastic bottles into his clothing lines BBC/Ice Cream. During a car ride to an ink parlor to get his arm tattoos removed (because he thinks they “suck”) he caught me up on his green transition and the story behind his crazy YouTube video.

How did Bionic Yarn come about?

I met Tyson through a mutual friend and he approached me with the concept that he had already launched. I thought it could be a really interesting way to give back to society so I signed up as partner and owner. I always want to take my influence and be responsible with it. So now I can sleep well at night knowing that I’m doing my part. Bionic Yarn is the perfect way for me to give back to God’s universe.

Will you be using it in your clothing lines?

Blending Bionic Yarn and BBC/Ice Cream is the goal. It’s great beause the yarn is so soft, you can’t tell that there is any form of plastic anywhere in it.

How do you envision Bionic Yarn growing?

We’d like for it to be the next Gortex. I want it to be incorporated into everyday use and for people to see it all over the Wal-Marts and Targets of the world. So that people can see that if they have a perfectly great green alternative, why not choose that?

Totally off-topic: What was up with that YouTube video of you singing and dancing in a McDonald’s in Paris?

The world doesn’t realize that I’m really like a class clown goofball. That’s who I really am. And the fact that so many people were surprised by the McDonald’s thing is proof of that. Granted, when it’s time for music, I’m serious and focused on work. But the rest of the time I’m a 100% goofball and my fans know that.

That clip made you a blog sensation.

I don’t know about all that [laughs]. But I’m actually going to start Twittering for the first time today. It will just be a way for me to share my thoughts

So are you going to blog about the tattoo removal? I hear it’s a painful process.

I don’t know. You’ll have to wait and see.
